Niacin: the 10 mg flush level
The reference value for niacin is 16 mg a day. As nicotinic acid, EFSA sets the upper level at 10 mg – above it, a harmless but uncomfortable skin flush can occur. As nicotinamide the upper level is far higher (900 mg).
Labels often just say “niacin”. If a product has 16–20 mg and you notice warmth or redness, take it with a meal.
FAQ
What is a niacin flush?
A short, harmless warmth and redness of the skin that nicotinic acid can cause above about 10 mg. Taking it with food usually helps.
Is vitamin B12 only in animal foods?
Almost only – that’s why many people on a plant-based diet take it as a supplement.
