Authorised EU health claims. They apply from 1.5 mg zinc per day (15 % of the 10 mg reference value).

How much zinc makes sense?

The nutrient reference value (NRV) is 10 mg a day. EFSA sets the tolerable upper intake level for adults at 25 mg a day – from food and supplements combined.

Most products here provide 7–15 mg. That’s fine on its own – but if you take two zinc products at once, add the amounts up. Taking zinc with a meal helps if it upsets your stomach.

FAQ

How much zinc do I need per day?

The EU reference value is 10 mg a day for adults. Many people get a large part of it from meat, cheese, legumes and whole grains.

Is 15 mg of zinc a day too much?

No. 15 mg is below the 25 mg a day EFSA considers safe for adults – as long as you don’t take another zinc product on top.

Which form is best: citrate, gluconate or oxide?

All three are permitted forms in the EU. Citrate and gluconate are often described as easier to absorb than oxide; for the authorised claims, the amount of zinc counts.

When should I take zinc?

With a meal, ideally at the same time each day. On an empty stomach zinc can cause nausea.
